DIY Built in Desk

Sharing is caring!

DIY Built in Desk for two! It was time to fill in the space, while making it functional and perfect for our little gamers.

Since we moved in all I could see is what you see above our DIY Built in desk. I disliked the support posts below, they drove me crazy. So I had the idea to make a desk for two of the boys and in reality all four kids can use the space its that BIG! Let me show you how we did it all!

We have so many plans for our basement, and this is just the beginning!

Here are all the befores!

Let’s start the DIY Built in Desk

I always forget all the steps into a project and it seems easy enough, to add drywall and framing. Until….

This is what I forget all the mess, I don’t want to even say how long it took me to clean up all the little pieces.

Once James took down the drywall it was time for framing it out, then adding new drywall.

Drywall is going up, and I can’t tell you how excited I was it literally felt like a new room!

Can you see it?? One wall is done, now the next.

Eek! Now its time for all the mud and tape, but first it’s time to start on the desk.

We grabbed this cabinet from Home Depot and we cut it to the size we needed – yes so stressful, but it will be worth it!

I have to tell you about the wood for the desk, we grabbed it from our local lumber yard – Westside Building Supply and it was only $15 a sheet! We might have bought 16 sheets for some other projects we have planned but let me show you James plan.

This wood is actually not a wood – it is a particle board with melamine and white alder skin. James used a biscuit Joiner to attach two pieces to a middle piece. On the outsides of the DIY Built in desk he used 1 x 4 x 12 ft. Select Kiln-Dried Square Edge Whitewood Common Softwood Boards.

We moved the desk, and it is a beast! James added more supports and got it ready before more work needed to finish the DIY Built in desk area.

After all the mud and tape, it was time for primer. Then the spray. Funny thing we were on such a deadline this 9 pm at night, we had two cans of texture spray and guess what that was not enough only for one little wall. All the stores we closed, I messaged neighbors and posted on facebook. Our neighbor has a paint shop and went for us, so grateful! We had to have it done this night and it saved the day!

The texture spray was all drying, and we had a long night ahead of us. First up vertical shiplap! We love using these panels from Home Depot so easy to use.

Next up was paint. We used a favorite, Behr Graphic Charcoal this is with one coat and another was needed.

Here it is! Now for the hardest part putting the desk in. Did I mention it is so long and heavy. I need to share a video of us getting it in, we didn’t think we were going to make it. Only one little ding in the paint and I think we all had a sigh of relief.

We kept going back and forth on wether to stain or seal. We decided to seal it and it turned out perfect. This was when it was still wet, see below how it turned out. Along with sealing the top we painted the cabinets and added knobs!

Here it is!! All complete with trim and all! Now to make it more personalized for the kids.

We added in the recessed power strip that has a USB.

These shelved I was so excited for, as much as I want to put cute decor on it Koen has always wanted a fun display for his Funkos.

Look at this before and after! Still another coat of painting needed but its amazing.

Here is a view from this side, but since we didn’t add shelves I wanted to do something special.

We have a pingpong table top for our airhockey table so we thought this holder was fitting. The scoreboard is so fun, it even comes with a remote and is battery operated or plugin.

Here is the funko wall! The look on the boys face made it all worth it for this space. We are so excited to keep doing more projects down here, and hopefully you follow along!
