Low-Maintenance Lawn : How We Created Ours
How we started creating a low-maintenance lawn we can actually enjoy with planting grass from the Seed Factory NW from Hardware Sales!

Before we dive into the grass and how amazing it is, I thought I would take you along the journey of this space. My dreams, vision and goals for it and yes it might have changed!

Five years ago we started with this. Then we had dreams and plans and we created this :

I dreamed of this space and it was exactly what I wanted. ( Until it wasn’t)

After adding all our gardens, we added a deck, and pergola. It is pretty but not what I envision for this space. I wanted something that is beautiful year round and while the flowers are gorgeous for a few months in the summer its a LOT of work for just that short time. I planned on giving away flowers, then I learned that it hurts all the farms around me and selling them was not for me. My boxes werent holding up, rotting and warping so I had to decide what was next. So naturally I sold all my tubers and then it was time for this …. a low-maintenance lawn

First I took out my roses, then my arbor and what a beautiful view it was.

Then I took out all the boxes – I would have given them away but they were rotten.

I always can see a vision but not all the work that goes into it, this is what I have planned! Now to make it come to life!
Now that everything is out lets transform it!

It has to get worse before it gets better right? But, really look at those rocks – now imagine beautiful grass!

Fresh new soil and time to plant!
How We Started Creating a Low-Maintenance Lawn We Can Actually Enjoy
James installed large landscape rocks along the edge of the lawn to create a natural border, helping keep the pea gravel neatly separated from the grass. It’s one of those small details that makes a huge difference, both visually and practically.
To soften the space, we planted lavender and boxwoods that provide year-round structure with very little maintenance. We also added stepping stones through the gravel to make the space feel inviting while connecting each area of the backyard.
With the landscaping taking shape, it was finally time to focus on the lawn.
Because we live in the Pacific Northwest, we wanted grass seed that was made specifically for our climate. We picked up Seed Factory NW grass seed at Hardware Sales, knowing it was designed to perform well in our region.

Why We Chose Seed Factory NW
Growing grass in the Pacific Northwest comes with its own challenges. We have cool, wet winters, dry summers, and plenty of foot traffic from kids, pets, and everyday life.
Choosing a regional grass seed gives your lawn a much better chance of establishing well and staying healthy throughout the year.
Before spreading the seed, we took the time to prepare the area by leveling the soil and creating a smooth surface for good seed-to-soil contact. Once the seed was down, we kept it consistently moist during germination, then slowly transitioned to deeper watering as the grass began to establish.

Time for seed! We have planted seed many times and have learned a lot! I will share some tips below! First tip is to get a seed spreader it makes such a difference!

Once you put down your seed, you aren’t done there. Make sure to put down either soil on top or peat moss! This will make such a difference. Next its time to water, then water some more and keep going till you see grass! Now for my tips all in one spot :
Tips for Planting Grass Seed Successfully
Planting grass seed isn’t difficult, but taking a little extra time during the prep work can make a huge difference in how your lawn turns out.
1. Start with a Clean Slate
Remove weeds, old grass, rocks, and debris before planting. The cleaner your surface is, the better chance your new grass has to establish.
2. Prepare the Soil
Healthy grass starts with healthy soil. Loosen the top few inches of soil and, if needed, add quality topsoil or compost to improve drainage and provide nutrients for new roots.
3. Grade and Level the Area
Take time to fill low spots and smooth out bumps before you seed. A level yard not only looks better but also helps prevent puddles and makes mowing much easier.
4. Use a Lawn Roller
After leveling, use a lawn roller to gently firm the soil. This creates a smooth surface and helps ensure good seed-to-soil contact, which is one of the keys to successful germination.
5. Spread the Seed Evenly
Whether you use a broadcast spreader or a drop spreader, apply the seed evenly across the area to avoid thick patches or bare spots.
6. Lightly Rake It In
Use a leaf rake to lightly work the seed into the top layer of soil. You don’t want to bury it too deep—just enough to improve contact with the soil.
7. Cover with Peat Moss or soil
A light layer of peat moss or soil helps retain moisture, protects the seed from drying out, and can help discourage birds from eating the seed. Just be sure to apply a thin layer so sunlight can still reach the seed.
8. Water Consistently
Keep the soil consistently moist during germination. Light, frequent watering is much better than soaking the area once a day. Once the grass begins to establish, transition to deeper, less frequent watering to encourage strong root growth.
9. Stay Off the Lawn
As tempting as it is to walk across your new lawn, try to avoid foot traffic while the grass is germinating. Young seedlings are delicate and can be damaged easily.
10. Be Patient
Grass doesn’t appear overnight! Depending on the seed variety and weather conditions, you’ll typically start seeing sprouts within 7–21 days. Continue caring for it, and before long you’ll have a thicker, healthier lawn.

After a few days – ten days you should be seeing this and its a good sign! We have grass! This seed is specifically made for the PNW and it does so well! The reviews are insane and so glad we used it!

We love hand watering, but we also use an overhead sprinkler! We do have sprinklers in our other grass but have sort of given up on that till fall – that is another project! Look how amazing it is so far! * we have had some naughty cats trying to tear it up so if you see some spots lets know its them.

The first mow! Look at the luscious grass!

Creating a Backyard That Fits Our Life
This project has become about so much more than growing grass.
We’re creating a space where we can gather with family, enjoy evenings on the deck, spend time in the glass house, and simply enjoy being outside without feeling like we’re constantly maintaining flower beds.
It’s proof that sometimes simplifying doesn’t mean giving something up—it means creating a space you’ll actually use and love every single day.
We’re excited to watch this lawn fill in and complete the vision we’ve been working toward. Sometimes the biggest transformations start with choosing the right foundation. Follow along for more and hope you enjoy this low-maintenance lawn post!
