Space Themed Teen Bedroom Makeover

Sharing is caring!

Space themed teen bedroom makeover made for a teen! We wanted it to be more grown up and not to kiddish, and I think we did just that with all our favorites from Pottery Barn Teen.

If you’ve ever wanted to create a bedroom that feels cozy, elevated, and a little bit magical—this space-themed teen room makeover might be your favorite project yet.

We took a plain room and completely transformed it by color drenching the ceiling and half the walls in a rich navy blue, then layered in furniture and decor from Pottery Barn Teen to bring the whole space together.

The result? A room that feels like stepping into the night sky.

The BEFORE : This is what we started with.

Why We Chose a Space-Themed Bedroom

Designing a teen room can be tricky—you want something that feels fun and personal, but not too “young ” which is what I normally see a space room as. But we have a constellation loving kid.

A space theme meant for a teen :

  • It feels immersive and creative
  • It grows with them (not something they’ll outgrow next year)
  • It pairs beautifully with deeper, moodier colors

Instead of going overly themed, we kept it subtle—letting the color palette and textures do most of the work. Pottery Barn Teen has all the perfect pieces. The twin bed was meant for an update, and we got this nightstand to match.

We didn’t want to go overly navy, so we added some bedding that was greens, whites, and some black. My kids always want grey in their rooms but since I am a millennial we cant do grey … a grey fluffy rug was a good compromise.

The Power of Navy Color Drenching

The biggest transformation in this room came from one design choice: color drenching.

We painted:

  • The entire ceiling
  • The top half of the walls

…in a deep navy blue. ( Hale Navy)

This technique instantly:

  • Made the room feel cozier
  • Drew the eye upward
  • Created that “wrapped in the night sky” feeling

Leaving the bottom half of the wall lighter helped keep the space from feeling too dark, while still giving that bold, dramatic look.

Tips for Creating a Color-Drenched Room

If you’re thinking about trying this in your own home, here are a few things we learned:

1. Choose the right color
Deep tones like navy, charcoal, or forest green work best for this look.

2. Balance with lighter elements
Keep flooring, furniture, or lower walls lighter to avoid making the room feel too heavy.

3. Use lighting intentionally
Good lighting is key—layered lighting helps keep the space warm and inviting.

4. Don’t overdecorate
Let the paint do the talking. Simple decor goes a long way.

Furniture & Decor from Pottery Barn Teen

To bring the room together, we used pieces from Pottery Barn Teen that balanced both style and function.

What I love about their pieces:

  • Clean, timeless designs
  • Durable enough for everyday teen life
  • Easy to mix and match with different styles

We focused on:

  • Cozy bedding layers
  • Functional storage
  • Simple, elevated decor that didn’t compete with the wall color

The goal was to let the navy walls be the statement, while everything else supported it.

This room turned out even better than we imagined.

It feels:

  • Cozy
  • Elevated
  • Fun without being overwhelming

And most importantly—it’s a space that can grow right along with them.

If you’ve been thinking about trying color drenching or creating a themed room that still feels timeless, this is your sign to go for it.
