If you’ve ever wondered where people store all their stuff… trust me, I’ve been asking the same question
Because for a while, ours was rough! I did not want a storage container or unit, but for temporary yes!
With my parents moving across the country and onto our property, we made the decision to give up one of our buildings so my mom could have a studio and my dad could have space to work. It was the right decision for our family… but it left us with one big problem:
Where do we put everything?
Holiday decor, storage bins, seasonal items—you name it. Our garage quickly became the only option, and it needed a complete transformation to actually work for us. Now its time for a garage makeover!

So we started from scratch.
Starting With a Blank Slate (That Wasn’t So Pretty)
Empty doesn’t always mean better… and that was definitely the case here.
Once we cleared everything out, we were left with a rough, unfinished garage that needed a lot of love. But honestly, starting with a blank slate gave us the opportunity to build something that would actually function for our family long-term.
First step? Clean it out completely.
We removed everything from the walls, patched every hole, and finally said goodbye to the old fluorescent lighting. That alone made a bigger difference than I expected.

Paint + Lighting: The First Big Transformation
Once everything was prepped, it was time to start fresh.

We tested a few paint colors (and let me tell you… everyone had opinions 😅). We even brought in the kids and grandparents to help decide. While there was a clear favorite, we ended up going in a direction that worked best for the space—and I’m so glad we did.
Before painting, we used a tinted primer (which can look a little confusing at first—yes, the gray stage threw a few people off!). But trust the process—it helps get better coverage and makes your final color look so much better.
With fresh paint and updated lighting, the garage already felt like a completely different space.
We used Sherwin Williams Iron Ore for paint in Matte Finish!

Upgrading the Garage Flooring
Next up: the floors these are from SafeRacks and I just love them so much!

If you’re redoing a garage, don’t skip this step. The flooring made such a big difference—not just visually, but in how the space functions day-to-day.

We chose a flooring option that was durable, easy to clean, and instantly made everything feel more finished. It also made organizing so much more satisfying (you know I love a good before and after 👏).

The Real Game-Changer: Storage + Organization
Now for the part that changed everything…you thought the floor was amazing and yes it was but this is from SafeRacks too and organization always makes everything better!

We added a full storage system using:
Shelving units
Storage bins (for all our seasonal items)
Overhead garage racks to maximize vertical space

This was key for us.

With all of our holiday decor and extra storage, we needed a way to get things up and out of the way while still keeping everything accessible.

Using overhead racks allowed us to:
Free up floor space
Store bulkier bins
Keep the garage functional (not just a storage dump)
And honestly… this is where it all came together.

Before and After: A Garage That Finally Works
From rough and empty… to fully functional 👏 Love this garage makeover!

And now:
Everything has a place
It’s organized and easy to maintain
We actually have usable space again
I truly didn’t think we’d get here—but this transformation might be one of my favorites yet.
